Over the course of my research, my focus has shifted from the damage to Dresden, urban loss, and its post war recovery to more of a study of allied strategic bombing on Dresden. I have not forgotten my original question, however, and while it likely take coding skills that I do not have to do, I would love to try and map out the bombing of Dresden by flight paths, ordinance drop estimates, and damage reports in a digital project. I currently cannot do that, but for now, I will be continuing work with the US Strategic Bombing Survey and other papers written by the U.S. that analyzed the bombing of Dresden and other cities in detail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If I can find a trustworthy source of American 8th Air Force and R.A.F. Bomber Command after action reports, I would like to break down the main raid on Dresden by munitions used and by time dropped if possible. For this, I could present the total weapons dropped on a bar graph, and then make additional visualizations beyond that for each wave of the attack. One issue I have found while writing this for the combat reports is that many of them are not digitized and are several states away from where I am. Thus, I will focus on ordinance if I can find the breakdown by type in the U.S.S.B.S. or the Statistical report from 1945. From there, I will put together the damage caused by each type of weapon and see if my conclusions on their effectiveness match what the U.S.S.B.S. claims about each type of weapon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
For this, another comparison might be in order, but to make it more comparable than using the total bombs dropped on a city, I might try to find a specific raid on another German city, such as Darmstadt in September 1944 or Hamburg in August 1943, so that the numbers and their respective damage are more easily comparable raid to raid. This would also make visualizing that data more doable since I would be once again comparing bomb load compositions, only this time, I would be focused on a single bombing event. Hopefully, I can find that specific data in the Physical Damage Division Report or another U.S.S.B.S. document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
